One Christmas, Rena and I got a fantastic dolls house with real working lights. We would spend ages arranging and rearranging the furniture and switching the lights on and off. We played a lot outside. Usually there would be a gang of us playing Kick the Can, Red Rover, Peever (hopscotch) and skipping ropes. I would borrow Gina Dicksons scooter and go at kamikaze speed down the back lane. My roller skates and my whip and peerie were favourites too! When we were given some pocket money, Rena and I would dash up to John O’Neil’s the newsagents, where we would take ages perusing the collection of scraps, pictures of angels, babies, fairies, religious scenes, gainsborough women in period costume wearing huge hats bedecked with plumes of ostrich feathers, nursery rhyme scenes, everything you’re imagination could think of and more.
